Observation details
I was uncertain of this bird's ID as the dark back and pale vermiculated flanks didn't match up in my experience. Ring-necked Duck, Lesser Scaup, or some combination of the two came to mind. Upon posting it to an internet bird ID site the consensus was it is a young Ring-necked Duck. Live and learn! It is unusual for any Aythya to be at this location. It did not look particularly healthy which may explain its occurrence.
