Observation details
At least two juveniles, possibly three, seen well at moderate distance in Brown's Cr. from Sunset Drive near water treatment plant and one again (or another bird) farther north looking from beach area. Observed in bright overcast light (obscured sun behind observer) over a period of 30 minutes as close as 200 m with 80x Questar. One bird seen alone but in general vicinity of COLOs, other bird(s) seen directly with COLOs for comparison. Observed swimming and diving. Distant photos obtained. Smaller than COLOs with smaller head and slimmer neck. Thin slightly upturned bill held mildly above horizontal. Crown dark to eye, lower face grayish-white but ill-defined. Rear neck and upperparts dark. Throat ill-defined medium gray wash without sharp lines of demarcation. Visible portions of remainder of underparts grayish-white. Identification by shape, size, and pattern of head and neck. Observer familiar with species.
