Observation details
(Rare) Photos. Seen creeping up and down trunks carefully inspecting moss clumps, a behavior and speed that struck me as different from the busy-body amakihi flitting about. Managed some decent photos when it came in close, that showed the blunter, shorter bill and broader mask of a ʻalawī. Found along the southeast corner of the loop. Delighted, as I didn’t think I’d find one of the rarer endemics during this brief first visit to the Big Island. U.S. bird #682. Lifer #1443.
