Distant photo showing white rump
Observation details
Small buteo with long, narrow, pointy wings. Pale buff below except for dark brown, messy bib. Wing linings pale buff below, dark feathers on trailing edge extending to dark wingtips. From above, gray-brown wings, dark wing tips, white rump. The Swainson's Hawk harassed a larger Red-tailed Hawk, following it for a while, almost jumping on the tail of the Red-tailed Hawk high above the fields. This encounter offered me great comparative views of the size difference (Swainson's Hawk was smaller) and wing profile (narrower, appearing longer vs shorter, rounder, broad wings of Red-tailed Hawk). Observed via scope from intersection of Milltail and Longcurve roads for roughly 15-20 minutes. Observed hovering twice. Wings held in dihedral (but not as pronounced as in Turkey Vulture) while soaring. Distant photos added.
