Observation details
Rare. First noticed under the feeders yesterday afternoon. I set out the nets this morning, and this was the first bird that flew into the net before I finished setting them up. HY by PC (narrow and worn primary coverts) and TS (narrow and pointed tail shape), male by PL (dark gray hood). Sharp contrast between the gray hood and orange sides + reddish-brown back, with a few reddish feathers creeping into the top of the hood. My first in 15 years of checking juncos under the feeders in Ohio, Michigan, and Massachusetts. This mist netting and banding is permitted by the Bird Banding Lab of the United States Geological Survey.
