Observation details
My best guess for this bird is 2nd winter LBBG. -all black bill -black primaries -mantle somewhat mottled but mostly dark grey, a significantly darker shade of gray than would be expected for RBGU, HEGU, or any other likely options. -streaking on neck, particularly lower neck -significantly larger than neighboring RBGU. To my eyes, this bird seemed larger relative to RBGU than I would expect for LBBG, but observation was difficult and I do not have much experience with these birds. -clear contrast between folded wing and the mostly white neck and belly -small dark patch around eye, could not determine eye color. Flew off the lake about 7am, did not see bird leave.
