Observation details

Larger bird than nearby Ring-necked ducks. Head and bill larger proportionate to body, indicating Greater Scaup lineage. Markings on bill are that of Ring-necked Duck indicating certain lineage on that side of the equation. Head “flat-topped” with peak further toward rear of neck, as on Greater Scaup. Head shape and peak remained constant with changes in posture. Plumage similar to Ring-necked, though white “ring” flared out and as not crisp as on a pure bird.
