Observation details
All black ducks with obvious white wing patches. Way out - flew in from the northwest in a jumbled string just above the waves heading straight inbound. They then turned eastbound as they got closer to shore. I am starting to believe they migrate south from the southern tip of Point Pelee, Canada to Avon Point (which juts out northward) because of the shorter distance across Lake Erie. "When migrating, flocks of Scoters fly low over the water well offshore, paralleling the coastline" (Kenn Kaufman Field Guide). I have also noticed that other migrating waterfowl at Veteran's are often heading to or coming from the northwest as opposed to straight east/west.
