Observation details
I'm struggling between vesper and savannah sparrow. Merlin photo id says Vesper and that's the way I lean given the strong eye ring, pale cheek patch facial feature and is that white in the outer tail feathers? The grainy photos make it hard to say for sure. Behaviorally, this guy was a bit of a loner, staying close to the ground when spooked, while the savannahs seemed to be bunched together and head for the trees when spooked. Lastly, a similar grainy photo of a bird from this location from a few days ago was ID'd on ABA's What's This Bird as a vesper. So, vesper it is, for now.
