Observation details
Medium-sized woodpecker foraging in black willow-cottonwood riparian woodland. Adult male with a black crown and nape broken by a bright red spot. Black cheek bordered above by a wide white post-ocular stripe and below by a white chin and throat. The underparts were white with a small black band protruding into the lower breast on both sides. The back was white and unmarked surrounded by black. The wings were also black and heavily spotted with white. The tail was black with the outer two or three feather white and lacking any black markings. The bill was heavy and black. The large size, bill proportions and voice eliminate similar Downy Woodpecker.
