Observation details
First state record found this afternoon by Ben Stubbs, along with Meghan Hines, Neil Skoog, and Anna Battaglia. Flycatcher with the same overall shape and proportions of an Eastern Phoebe. Dark, slate-colored head, breast, flanks, back, wings, and tail. Bright white undertail and belly, meeting the dark breast in a triangular fashion. Minimal white edging on the primaries, but the southern "White-winged" Black Phoebe subspecies group ruled out due to lack of extensive white edging on primaries and would be an even more extraordinary vagrant. See attached photographs. Beady black eyes. Dainty black bill. I did not note leg color. Vocalized frequently w/ "tsip" call notes during my observation period. See attached audio recording. The bird pumped its tail in a downward manner when perched. I observed it sallying from perch to perch on the cliff face, sometimes becoming hidden behind the live cedars.
