Observation details
N45.98856 W89.09028 FLCc big cedars also Spruce. along the edge of one of the Blackjack spring ponds. Lowland conifers including spruce and cedars along the spring pond with dense balsam, spruce, while pine and some hardwoods mixed in up the hillside. We heard grouse sounds and 30 seconds later the fledgling erupted from the brush and flew very unsteadily into a tree. Landed about head high. The others moved into denser vegetation without flight. We could see movement but nothing more definite. We watched the little one for perhaps 5 minutes, Then slowly tried to find the hen et.al. She/they flew into dense balsam and on back towards the first fledgling which flew too. We only saw the one fledgling pictured. It was calling almost constantly. There was almost no tail, but what we could see was rusty at the tip. The tail doesn't show in the photos. Another bird, I'm assuming the hen, was vocalizing almost continuously from dense undergrowth down the trail. Could also hear additional young calling like the one we could see. Since we hadnt seen an adult to easily Identify, I consulted with Nick Anich on ID of fledgling. He concurred with SPGR.
