Observation details

Juvenile bird explored the riprap just above the ocean on the inland side from the lifeguard station. It went between boulders, occasionally appearing to lunge toward invertebrates, possibly some flies included. Note scalloping on coverts, new feathering, mostly gray plumage with darker gray outer primaries, yellow-green legs, straight bill with slight amount of greenish at base of lower mandible and otherwise dark gray grading to black at tip.
