Vagrant on a European Atlantic island
Observation details
Originally found yesterday by Swiss birders and still present this afternoon, it showed briefly on 3 occasions, and long enough once for documentation images. Distinctive and well-marked bird when seen in good light, being somewhat bunting-like but with a heavier, deeper-based bill, short primary projection and comparatively shortish tail. Mantle greyish with prominent black streaks; scapulars, median and lesser coverts richer chestnut-brown, with finer streaking on scaps. Flight feathers and greater coverts black with chestnut or rufous edges. Head duller brown with subtly darker cap, paler eyering and yellow-infused supercilium extending back behind dark eye; lores pale. Underparts paler and toned greyish but patchily whiter on belly and with faint yellow tinge on breast, becoming brighter yellow and white in malar area, either side of narrow blackish chin/throat. Bill deep at base but quite triangular in profile. Silent while I observed it. Photographed
