Media notes

BBWO, pecking at spruce bark and occasional sharp "kip" notes

Observation details

I was out repairing a bird feeder when I heard this bird's sharp, raspy call and saw it fly up to a dying spruce. It hung around for ~ 20 minutes before leaving. All black back; yellow on top of head, white underneath with barring along flanks. About the same size as a HAWO which was next to it for a very brief time. Photos and recording of it primarily pecking at bark and giving an occasional "Kip" call. (Interestingly, a possible BBWO was heard at Sears Island on 9/20 this year by myself and two other birders. Are they moving south this fall?)
