Observation details
**Rare** Extended views of this typically secretive sparrow, seen in exquisite detail while preening, from about 20 feet away in the cattails in excellent lighting conditions. Distinctive face with orange throat and supercilium, gray auriculars, nape, and median stripe, and brown crown. The vibrant orange tones, which extend partially down the flanks and towards the vent, are indicative of the interior breeding population. Lack of streaks on the flanks, among other details, rule out LeConte's Sparrow. Subsequently seen by many observers.
