Observation details

At stop #7 (2.5), I was giving the second bout of NSWO song (i.e., between 7 and 7.5 minutes into the 10-minute period) when a barred owl flew north across the road from south of me, and landed on the north side of the road ~15 m from me ~5m up in a bare deciduous tree just in front of my car. I continued the second bout of NSWO song, paused for 30 sec, and then gave the third 30-sec bout. The barred owl remained silently perched until my watch alarm sounded at the end of the 10-minute survey (i.e., 2.5+ minutes after the owl had arrived). At that point, as I reached to turn off the alarm, I also hit the owl with my flashlight beam for the first time. It immediately gave a wail & hoot call, which included two bouts of the terminal hooting sequence. After the owl called, I turned off the flashlight, and the owl then perched silently for another 3 minutes, at which point it dropped from its perch and flew back south across the road and vanished into the woods.
