Potential roost site for Chimney Swifts. This does not appear to be a Fall roost site. This was my 1st visit.
Observation details
After reviewing Google Maps and Google Earth Pro I spotted a potential roost site on the southwest section of the Cloisters. This structure is visible from Margaret Corbin Drive and the chimney looks clear from the overhead views. ⭕️ Zero (0) swifts were observed entering the structure during the count. To count the swifts, I primarily utilized naked-eye observation and sometimes relied on handheld binoculars but the roost is close enough where binoculars aren't necessary. The highest number of swifts seen simultaneously in flight was six (6) seen during the 4th minute before sunset. Sunset on October 6th is at 6:29p (1829) [based on NOAA's Map]: • -5' before SS (+0) • +10' after SS (+0) • +20' after SS (+0) • +30' after SS (+0) TOTAL = 0 The count started at 1824.0 (5.0 min. before sunset) and ended 35 minutes later at 1859.0 (30.0 min. after sunset). Additional notes: • The behavior around the Cloisters was interesting to watch as this is not a Fall roost and I rarely dedicate time scouting for new roosts. I have discovered 9 roosts on Manhattan and am hoping to extend this number over the next few years. — There was light activity with a maximum of 6 swifts seen in-flight while I carried out the minute counts. During the 6th minute after sunset at 6:35p, swift activity ceased and none were seen over the next 24 minutes. This is opposite from the 944 5th Avenue roost on 5-Oct-2025 where the activity was light for the 1st 20 minutes and picked up considerably beginning with the 10th minute after sunset.
