Observation details
***MEGA. First record for ABA. Critically endangered according to IUCN. The closest records to the US are from Costa Rica, dating back to the mid-2010s and as recent as August 1st. Essentially, the range is restricted to the Galapagos Islands and the northern Humboldt Current, further adding significance to this record. Lisa Hug's 7th Albatross for Bodega Bay Pelagic!!! Extremely large albatross was first observed behind the boat at a long range. Immediately obvious was its large, protruding white head as the bird moved closer, its all-dark chocolate mantle becoming noticeable — then a yellow bill. Confirming identification as Waved Albatross. Apparent AHY [M-TPB] Waved Albatross — massive bright yellow bill, pale but not white underwings, blueish-toned feet, bold white head with yellow wash on nape and vermiculations surrounding the collar. Large proportions relative to Black-footed Albatross nearby, essentially dwarfing them. According to Peter Pyle, this bird is a "minimum of 39 months old [3rd calendar year] or 33 months since fledging," given that the species moults on a yearly basis. This bird exhibits "molt-clines" in the primaries and secondaries, indicating that it has already undergone one complete molt. Operating under the assumption that a full Second Prebasic [SPB] molt cycle takes a year to complete, it will be ~39 months old. Minimum of two generations of LC and MC, molt-cline in FF. PP wear of 3/4 according to MAPS protocol, missing multiple secondaries. Personal note, absolutely spectacular bird. One of the highlights of my life and birding career. The type of bird we always pray for on these trips finally came true. It was truly an unforgettable experience and something I will treasure for the rest of my life. It was amazing to be able to share this experience with friends and experience the level of excitement I have never seen before.
