Observation details
*Rare; one of less than five records in the last decade and the first documented. Classic spring overshoot beyond their breeding range in the Brooks. Far out in the tundra on Cakeeater (unexpected location for one), remarkably spotted by a tour group on the road and graciously pointed out. We had to walk out to find it, but it came out for good views near a tall metal structure that it was sheltering near. Stony cold face and body, but with shockingly rufous edging to the remiges and uppertail coverts. Most notably lacked a tail at all, quickly attaining the moniker “the Tundra Antpitta” courtesy of Frank. Photos to come
