Observation details
Heard first. Then spotted pecking gently by my girlfriend who was the one who pointed out to me. The exact location of the woodpecker was shared with me by a fellow birder who I met on the trail around noon. He dug an arrow into the soil at the spot where you turn off of the main trail to go onto a smaller trail, and he put an X in the soil on the smaller trail at the spot where he had seen the bird. This location lined up with the description of the location of the bird that another birder told me on the trail even earlier this morning. It’s been hanging out at this spot all day I think! Park at the trailhead closest to Slack at Woodroffe, then walk south on the trail until you reach the first fork in the trail, turn right onto the smaller trail at that fork (big arrow in the soil). Then stop at the X in the soil and listen for the gentle tapping. It’s a male, as I was able to see the yellow cap. Blurry iPhone photo will be added to this post.
