This bird has been on my Wake County target list in recent years. When the Briercreek Reservoir began to drain, I began to put in a lot of time there on the theory that you won't find a bird unless you really look for it ...but you might not find it even then! So, yes, I got lucky. Using my scope, I spotted this long-legged, buff-breasted sandpiper on the opposite shore and became rather excited! Medium size, long yellow legs, a beautiful pale buffy breast and face, obvious dark eye with pale eye ring, short black bill. Delicate in appearance, dove-like head, daintily picking food from the mudflats. Stunning pattern above with dark-centered, pale-edged feathers. My favorite shorebird of all! Photos attached...
