Media notes

Sounds: Common Loon calls: hoots and cooing; mechanical: feet slapping; environmental: water splashing. Other animals heard: Spring Peepers. Behavior Description: Copulation attempt. Water splash at 4s suggests male rose out of the water and onto nest where female was sitting. Hoots are heard beginning at 9s, followed by sound of male's feet slapping beginning at about 16s+ as he balances on the female's back. More hoots follow. The male returns to the water at 35s+, again as suggested by the splash in the water. For several minutes, more both hoots and cooing are heard -- both are calls used to communicate at close range. Recorded at 9:08PM. Temperature 55°F. Wind 6mph from SSW.
