Observation details
Observed from the private boat ramp at Big Mesa. The spent most of its time west of the boat ramp, and disappeared at times into the cove SW from the boat ramp. Smaller in both body size and wingspan than the juvenile Sabine's Gull in close proximity. Black on crown and black earspot. In flight the bird showed a bold black M pattern on the wings created by extensive black in the primaries as well as a bold carpal bar. Tail was white with black band at tip. Mantle was mostly blackish with some pale gray showing. I believe this record was accepted by the NMBRC as the second photographically documented record. Avery poor video grab by Baumann can be found at http://www.flickr.com/photos/abqjaeger/2358561147/. The bird was still present the following day and I believe Oldenettel was able to obtain better photos.
