Observation details
*Scarce to rare fall migrant along Lake Champlain. This appears to be the 3rd record of Buff-breasted Sandpiper in Clinton County. Two juveniles flew in from the north while I was exploring the extensive sandy deltas at both outlets of the Ausable River. These birds were seen south of the southernmost outlet. Delicate, medium sized shorebirds with pale buffy face and underparts. Crisp, scaly patterned upperparts with dark fringed scapulars vs. brownish fringed scaps as seen in adults. Plain white underwings seen in flight. Slim dark bill, dark eye and yellow legs. Almost dove-like in appearance with a distinct high-stepping foraging pattern. Photos.
