Observation details
I first found this bird from the refuge road that borders the westside of the flight pond. The bird was close to 300 yards from me at this point. I was able to get closer to the bird from the two-way middle refuge road that borders the south side of the pond. From the two-way road, the bird was about 200 yards away. It eventually flew closer to me and I was able to watch it from no further than 100 yards. The bird was associating with a loose flock of Lesser Yellowlegs. It spent much of it¿s time foraging on the open mud flats but occasionally would disappear into deeper grass. This was a medium sized shorebird, about the same length as the numerous Lesser Yellowlegs in the area. In comparison to the yellowlegs, the bird was much chunkier and squat. It was brownish-gray above, with some pale fringing to the wing coverts. The belly was whitish, and the upper breast was white with fine gray barring. Then head was grayish, with a pale supercilium and a faint whitish line below the eye. The bill was about the length of the head, and fairly stout. The legs were yellowish-green. In flight, the bird was mostly dark brownish-gray above. At a distance the rump was pale gray and contrasted with the darker back. This pale gray color was created by fine, pale gray barring on a pale background. The flight feathers were dark and contrasted slightly with the grayish upperparts. The wings had a thin, pale stripe running the entire length. Poor photos.
