Observation details
34.4217658, -119.6581641 I got lucky when I arrived in the parking lot very close to these GPS coordinates. Wim Van Dam took a few minutes of his personal time to make sure I see the bird. First, the bird was purchasing around one foot off the ground in the Reeds on one side of this muddy beach stretch, then it flew over us and landed on the other set of reeds. If you stand at that spot where the GPS coordinates would put you look either to your left or to your right until you see a grayish green flycatcher with a large bill that is pale underneath and dark above. Subjectively this bird feels greener than a willow flycatcher. The tertials are bright and very well defined. The head is round. Wim took photos of the bird while I was standing next to him. I have added a photo taken through my binoculars with my cell phone to document that I saw the bird. It is at the left edge of the photo.
