Observation details
Watched one take off from the water. It took about 15m of running and flapping. It flew very low over the water, landed on a body and hung its wings out to dry. When in the water their backs are low almost under water. They hold their heads up with bills pointing slightly upwards. Seen flying from the side their bodies are angled up slightly, a few degrees? Tail feathers fan out when slow, big semi circular shape, looked like there were gaps between the tail feathers when they were spread out e.g. taking off. Many on the pipes at south shore. Many more small groups on shore on west side and around to the north, fewer on the east side.
