Observation details
Continuing in the far corner of the cove near a patch of reeds, foraging on flying insects on the mud in and around a dead seal or sea lion. Tide was rising from about 4-5 feet during the time we saw this bird, and pretty close to the lower high tide for the day, which seemed to help us get excellent views as the reeds were flooded. We walked out to the end of the path as it juts into the bay and the bird was still there when we returned, now with less area to forage. After several minutes it flew into a nearby flowering bush, which we tentatively identified as a toyon. It perched inside, visible, while we watched it. We assumed this could be its roosting spot for the afternoon. Amazing looks overall! Photos to be added.
