Observation details
One of the most incredible things I’ve seen. Took up the ENTIRE Half Moon Bay inshore. Once they began to stream north toward the harbor, I watched in my scope rows of ~26 by a column of ~20 moving through in frame for 2 seconds. This flow went on for at least 30 minutes and did not appear to be looping as I could see them fill the end point by the harbor and nothing going south in the distance. ChatGPT helped me estimate because I’m a dumb dumb: “If your field of view contained ~520 birds at any moment and each stayed in frame for 2 s, then the flow rate is 520 ÷ 2 = 260 birds/s. Over 30 min = 1,800 s → 260 × 1,800 = 468,000 unique birds passing through your view.”
