Observation details
Tenth visit to site. Numbers determine by method posted on 8/11/25. Known site mega roost site with 10,000-30,000 previously reported. Arrived about 8:10 pm, about 30-45 mins later than past visits and birds had begun arriving. I was interested to see if they were still here since the cold front had arrived. The birds were arriving from the north-northeast. Behaviors seemed somewhat different tonight. More groups had formed and each group was flying in a different pattern, direction and height, as if they were ‘practicing.’ The birds that were approaching the area flew quickly and directly into the trees. The column area above the meadow was not filled with birds until after 8:30pm, later than previous nights. As I was leaving around 8:50 pm, thousands of birds were still in this column and barely visible due to low light. Keep hoping to get a recording of the awesome sound, but traffic and cicada noise drastically interfered with the recording.
