First alternate or definitive alternate plumage aspect (rather uniform appearing remiges, rectrices, and the extent of barring on the rump may point to an ASY bird - but better photos required
Observation details
Shorebird with a medium-small body; long, thin, decurved black bill; and medium length, black legs. In alternate plumage aspect, but unclear if second-year (A1) or ASY (DA). Referring to my photos -- the back included a mix of formative or basic, and alternate feathers; the wing coverts looked uniform gray, formative or basic, and very worn; the breast and belly were blotchy white and rufous/chestnut, with white undertail coverts, and sparse black spots along the vent; the primaries and secondaries appeared uniformly worn, and rather uniform in color (at least no clear molt limits); the rump and upper tails coverts were white with broken barring; distinct white upper wing strip, and underwing coverts strikingly white; and the tail feathers also appeared worn and uniform. This bird was found by Toby and Laura Burke on 18 Aug.
