After forgetting my Moleskine and pen I luckily had a paper bag and a spare pen. This documents the notes which will at one point disappear.
Observation details
To view the Chimney Swift roost at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Inwood, head to the east side of the church near Park Terrace West on Isham Street. The roost is on the church's NW corner which is also visible on Cooper Street along the church's north side. 🔲 Forty-four (44) swifts were observed entering the roost during the count. Initially, I started out viewing without optics and then watched the roost continuously (except when taking short notes) with 10x42 binoculars from the 28th minute after sunset. The first swift entered the roost during the 8th minute after sunset, and the last entry was during the 28th minute after sunset. The highest number of swifts seen simultaneously in flight was eight (8) seen during the 1st minute after sunset. Sunset on August 12th is at 7:58p (1958) [based on NOAA's Map]: • -10' before SS (+0) • +10' after SS (+1): 2006 • +20' after SS (+35): 2009 (3), 2010 (6), 2011 (4), 2012, 2013 (2), 2014 (14), 2015 (2), 2017 (3) • +30' after SS (+8): 2019, 2020 (3), 2021, 2022, 2024, 2026 TOTAL = 44 A total of one (1) swift was seen exiting the chimney during the 28th minute after sunset. Forty-three (43) appear to be occupying the roost by the end of the count. The highest number of entries per minute occurred during the 12th, 13th, and 16th minutes after sunset, with 6, 4, and 14 entries respectively. The count started at 1948.0 (10.0 min. before sunset) and ended 40 minutes later at 2028.0 (#.0 min. after sunset). Additional notes:
