Observation details

Large patch of red on crown extending to the neck, longer bill and heavier barring on flanks might suggest a possible hybird between Hoofmann's and Black-cheeked woopeckers as both occur in the area. Experiencial sighting by hotel owner (Jose Alvarez) and hotel guides suggested the nest was detected with a mix couple (HOWO x BCWO) and this odd-plumage bird was reported soon after producing confusion as a possible Red-crowned Woodpecker way out of its normal range. Taxon needs to be added if we want to label that properly.
