Observation details
Immature (juvenile, 1st cycle) first found here 21 July by Doug Pio. When I arrived, the bird was in the close flats at the curve of Destiny Bay Road. I drove past this southwestern-most extension of the Little River tidal flats and walked back to the curve. But the bird had flown to the north side unbeknownst to me and was no longer close to the road. It was surprising how easily this bird could disappear behind rocks on the far side of the cove. The tide was over halfway out (~4.5' at Cutler Harbor station), and the flats were all exposed. Eventually, as the tide dropped further, the bird moved east along the border of the bay here and even foraged by sweeping its bill in the shallow saltwater flats almost mid-channel. I did watch the bird preen extensively (most of the time I watched it). Long-legged wading bird with spoon-shaped bill. White head and neck with feathers cloaking all but the immediate facial area around the eye, pale pink coloration, and black tipped primaries suggest this was a bird of the year. Its bill was dull, yellowish-white with a pinkish-gray tinge. The legs were yellowish to pinkish. I could not discern the eye color, but the facial skin was a sickly, pale bluish-green.
