Observation details

Juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron hunting from the shoreline of the Potomac River. Seemed to be haphazard in it's approach, darting back and forth rather than patiently stalking the small fish beneath the surface. It managed one fish in dozens of attempts. During my observations, a snapping turtle surfaced about 4 feet away from the Heron then went under again. Neither the turtle nor the heron seemed interested in the other, though both clearly noticed each other.
