Recognized by: -plumage (common and arctic 1 cy are still in the northern emisphere and 2cy would be way more advanced with no juv wing marginal and median coverts left) -smaller size than the South American terns around -smaller and thinner bill than the South American terns around -patterned chessboard tertiary -black marginal coverts -black framed greater coverts -very round head (for silhouette examples and other info check https://faansiepeacock.com/identifying-antarctic-terns/) For a bird in a very similar plumage see the following photographed in early August in South Africa: https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/618923819
