Observation details
• Four were spotted over the cemetery from the north side of the church at 1819. • Seven flew low over the North Presbyterian Church on the north side of 155th Street at 1838 then headed south over Trinity Cemetery. There is a suitable opening on the northern church on the NW corner of the tallest structure visible on overhead views. The roosts (if there are two) would be just over 230 feet apart. • Sixteen (16) low over both churches at 1844. • Twenty (20+) over Trinity Church at 1848. • Forty (40+) swarming overhead by 1851 — at sunset. 🔍 The only eBird report related to this roost was from 2 Aug 2020 < https://ebird.org/checklist/S72063384 > by Kyle Werner. The Chimney Swift roost at the Church of the Intercession at Trinity Cemetery on 155th Street and B'way was viewed the northwest corner of 155th Street and B'way. There were decent winds and the swifts were forced to make many feigned attemts at the eventual roost location on the west side of the bell tower making it easy to anticipate that this was where they were headed. Overhead views show this is the largest entry point on the tower < https://satellites.pro/New_York_City_map#B40.832307,-73.945216,21 >. 🔲 Ninety-seven (97) were counted entering the west side of the bell tower. Binoculars are needed since they are disappearing behind a wall in order to enter the roost. First entry was during the 3rd minute after sunset and the last entry was during the 17th minute after sunset. Sunset on September 23rd is at 6:51pm (1851): • +10' after SS (+13): 1854, 1856 (2), 1858, 1859, 1900 (8) • +20' after SS (+84): 1901 (40), 1902 (14), 1903 (15), 1904 (4), 1905 (10), 1908 (1) • +30' after SS (+0) TOTAL = 97 I stayed until 1921.0 (31 min. after sunset).
