Observation details
***mega; first NYS record. Original notes: A tiny dove, about the size of a Hermit Thrush. Its bill, head, and body were proportioned much like a Mourning Dove in miniature, but its tail was relatively shorter and was not pointed. Its legs were unbanded, and its toes appeared intact and healthy. The basal half of the bill was red, and the distal half was blackish. The legs and feet were pink. The eye usually appeared dark, but in strong light showed a deep red tone. At rest, its plumage was mostly brown, but there were many exceptions to this overall pattern: the nape and hind-crown were rather bright grayish-blue, with fine black scaling; the breast and many of the wing coverts were strongly washed with bright pink; like the nape, the breast showed fine black scaling; some of the wing coverts showed bold bluish-black marks; the back was unmarked grayish-brown; in flight, the spread wings showed ample rusty-red, hints of which could be seen sometimes on the bird at rest; the pattern of the tail feathers, which I observed only incompletely on the resting bird or briefly in flight, appeared quite typical of many doves--central rectrices mostly brown and outer rectrices with subterminal black and terminal white; some of the feathers in the rear flanks and undertail showed vague dusky markings; ph.
