Media notes

Should be ssp. 'simplex'/'blythi'. Not responsive to playback of nominate C. r. rufigastra but did come in somewhat hesitantly upon playing philippine ssp. recordings. Female bird, with more diffuse orange underside and pale whitish lores.

Observation details

Searched specifically for this bird today, as I’ve previously (mostly in winter) had singing birds in the dense woods with disused roads near Fontana. Very quiet here, in the already very hot morning and no response initially. Then weak response but once playing Philippine subspecies of mangrove blue, the bird was responsive and came in.

Additional species

  • Gray-backed Tailorbird Orthotomus derbianus
