Observation details
Creek crossing with reedbeds and the creekline follows the road closely heading north. Walked along the road heading north playbacking every 50 meters. All birds heard on the north side of the crossing. Motorized, crik, and whooping calls heard. No Lewin’s Rails detected. Surveying methods: Playback with a bluetooth speaker every 30-60 meters or where the habitat looks possible for Spotless Crakes, Lewin’s Rails, and Australian Spotted Crakes. Motorized and whooping calls used for Spotless Crakes. Grunting, then kair call, then kekking used for Lewin’s Rails. I wait up to 10 minutes maximum for a response if the habitat looks good. Very careful about double counting. Any individuals calling from the direction I already counted are not counted again. Individuals that have a delayed response are also not counted as they could have ran in from where I counted already.
