Observation details
Seen and heard to the southeast of pool 10. Audio uploaded. Further description of the encounter added on July 19: I heard the bird calling in the trees across the channel southeast of pool 10. I did not see it then but recognized the call. The bird flew southwest and overhead, following the channel, and at that point I could see the familiar cuckoo body shape. It perched east of the road leading to the pool 14 turnaround and continued to call. I approached and was able to see the black bill and red eyes, along with white crescents on the tail. I was not able to take a photo before this bird continued to fly southwest, but I did photograph and identify a Black-Billed Cuckoo in Cole County in May of this year. Although it contains other bird and insect sounds, the recording, I believe, is diagnostic, largely consisting of cu-cu-cu in sets of the same pitch and length, with pauses in between each set. I have included a recording at the original volume, and the same recording edited to be amplified.
