Observation details
Found at 20:15 on seasonal 2-way road, on east side in row of burned trees, behind second large Cottonwood on eastern side of road. Flushed along with 7 Black-crowned Night Herons. Two birds, one clearly adult, the other a first-year bird(?), but not an immature (no streaking present). Long legs extended well beyond tail in flight. Pale cheek patch present. Slimmer and longer-necked than Black-crowneds which flushed at the same time. The 2 YCNH gave much higher-pitched alarm calls than the BCNH, which is what called our attention to them. It was after sunset and fairly dark, but we managed to get photos of the adult bird.
