Media notes
On th perch. Finally steadied itself, then promptly fell off. Visually checked area under nest box 5 minutes later. The bird was gone. Success.
Observation details
Fledgling. Second of two chicks fledged this evening. The first fledged yesterday evening. Chick was begging pretty pathetically, mom was trilling, came closer and trilled more. Finally, approached chick and offered food bribe, feed, then departed. Trilling to chick, chick made the move. Exited the nest box opening somewhat precariously. Mom showed up to offer encouragement. Chick got on perch, steadied itself, then promptly fell off. I waited five minutes and observed area below nest box. It was gone. I take that it flew off. See sequence of images. This moment always amazes me. A happy but terrifying moment. Have observed the same pair over a number of springs watch them successfully fledge their young.
