Observation details

Known breeding location. We parked in the Pacific Crest Trail trailhead parking lot on the south side of San Felipe Rd and walked down the creek bed to the west. We pretty soon heard the loud THWIP call which proved to be the most common and the easiest sound for us to recognize. But they made a variety of vocalizations and provided a few good looks while actively moving up and down the creek. The bills were noticeably bigger than Ash-throated. Two birds were seen together and there may have been more. The best recording we got was the very repetitive call that Pieplow calls the WIP call. As always, no playback/recordings used. [EM]
