Observation details
Identification Notes: Identification was based on size, shape, call, and plumage characteristics visible under flashlight. I am familiar with the Walden’s subspecies, which is expected in this area. The distinctive call was also a key part of the ID. Observation: The owls were observed during a night walk in a patch of semi-evergreen forest. The individuals were spread across a small area (within ~400 meters), and the count was made based on individual visual confirmation using a flashlight and recording their calls. Counting Method: Each individual was counted separately. I moved slowly through the area (understory vegetation), taking care not to double-count any birds. I visually confirmed 4 perched individuals, and after spending time carefully assessing their positions and vocalizations. There were 2 additional separate individuals, calling from distant patch bringing the total to 6.
