Observation details
We carefully counted the 5 Reddish Egrets on the tidal flats near the inlet. We had 4 in sight at one time. Birds were seen as close as about 75 meters with binoculars and 30x scope. Birds were seen next to others herons/egretsibises, including Tricolored Herons, for comparison. All birds were dark-morph birds. Note unique size--smaller than Great Egret but clearly larger than the smaller herons/egrets. Some of the birds did the typical frenzied feeding. All birds had darkish grayish/blackish legs, slatey bodies/wings contrasting with reddish necks/heads, very pale eyes. Note that east Shackleford has been a very good spot for this species for several years.
