The bird looked pretty plain-faced like this a lot of the time which led me to missing Whimbrel features until later.
Observation details
When I first saw this bird I immediately considered Whimbrel but passed it off as LBCU until I noticed a conspicuous white stripe down the crown in my pictures. The wings were plain grayish brown when open. Easily dwarfed by the crow that flew in to steal a prey item it found. No white on the rump.
