Observation details
First seen by Ann R. on Sunday. Amazing find and thorough ID. Seen around 5pm with binoculars, then with the scope. Elegantly-wicked, small, slender and long-tailed adult. Whitish overall, with conspicuous white tail and contrasting black shoulders, dark wrist spots, heavy on the black eyeshadow. Observations include: Perched, kestrel-like hovering, harrier-like flying back and forth (the best was when it flew away from a dumb-jerk photographer who decided to trespass into the grasslands), dihedral soaring, wings held in a ‘V’ during descent while hunting, and seen eating. There was even a rainbow! 🌈 We could have watched this raptor until the sun set. Crazy to see this bird in NJ, but not during our visit to south FL. Hope it sticks around so that others can see this kite without boarding a plane or train. Five stars. Would recommend
