NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 3. Bulk reel: 180 203 tape. LN. Weather: "Clear" but high, thin clouds. Song after playback. Quality: 2 (parts ~ 1-). Level: 0. As this species has been found twice in "wooded" areas, I decided to try to find it elsewhere and this AM ~ 6:30 I parked truck @ km 14- and began walking down the road from there. Some 200-300 m. above km 13 I heard song by this species and saw a male foraging on Panicum maximum at a wooded part but in the scrubbier tangles, the "guirnalda" region. I went to bring truck and recording equipment down here and when I returned heard bird singing up the slope in an area of [illegible word]. Don't know if same bird but probably was. As I couldn't locate it for recording, I played the prepared field tape which begins with recordings by Alan Lill, from Trinidad. The bird responded immediately and flew down in excited reaction. Every playing continued to elicit excited reactions by this bird. It flew back and forth and sang constantly. Its song now seemed rather different from the natural song: longer phrases and frequent repetitions; also it used a buzz after almost every phrase. I didn't hear these in natural song but as they're of relatively low volume, I may have missed them. This bird seems less black than those seen at km 8 and km 11 and may not yet be in the definitive plumage of adult male: the red at base of bill is not as bright as in bird at km 11. However, I note that its "stance" in singing is same as T. obscura and in song with bill open the inside of mouth is a conspicuous bright magenta. Bird uses a "buzz" after almost every phrase; also it seems to vary the phrases somewhat. Some of this recorded at intentionally high gain to try to record better the "buzz." Quality: 1 to 2. Level: 0. Response to playback: Different song.
